ABOUT THE ARTIST

Elmira Solo (b. 1986, Almaty, Kazakhstan) is a contemporary mixed-media artist whose work is shaped by close attention to lived experience, including periods of psychological pressure and survival. Across different bodies of work, her paintings stay near moments of internal change as they are being lived, before they are fully understood or explained. Rather than offering narratives or conclusions, the work remains open, allowing experience to register through form, material, and attention.

Solo works with collage, spray paint, acrylic, and found papers in a process driven by material response and restraint. Structure and spontaneity meet on the surface through accumulation, revision, and adjustment. Rather than illustrating ideas, the work develops through sustained attention, without forcing clarity or predetermined outcomes.

She holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation from Sheridan College and worked in the animation industry for over a decade before transitioning to contemporary art. Solo lives and works in Ottawa and has exhibited in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. Her work is held in private collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
